Custom Homes

We all heard the saying “they don’t build them like they used to anymore”, referring to how homes today are not built like homes of yesteryear. This saying is absolutely true! Homes today are built FAR better than the way homes were built previously – at any time in history.

Homes today will withstand earthquakes and high winds better, will have better indoor air quality, will consume less resources to be built and will use less energy to operate, not to mention the larger spaces, better layout, added light, better fixtures, appliances, and so forth.

Homes today are also far more complex than they used to be, even when compared to homes built a little as 5-10 years ago. Automation, energy-sensitive systems, ‘smart’ fixtures (plumbing/electrical/etc.) and appliances, media and distribution options, just to name a few – all demand knowhow, expertise and experience not readily found amongst production builders and remodeling contractors and, regrettably, sorely lacking among some custom home builders as well.

A custom home should reflect the owners’ tastes and life style, be optimized to the lot it is being built on, be designed and built to owners’ budget, meet the highest specs, be compatible with its neighborhood and be a great place for the family to live, entertain and see the kids grow in. That’s a very tall order indeed.

We have completed out first hi-end custom home in June 91’ (yes, that long ago). That particular, magnificent and complex home was featured in the Los Angeles Times Home Tour that year and won an AIA award.
Many years have passed since we built that first large-scale, hi-end custom home. Many years in which we have relentlessly garnered more knowhow, experience, expertise and enthused clients.

Our A+ rating with the BBB (their highest) and long list of enthused clients, along with a long list of media features and awards we garnered through the years, are all a testament to our unwavering commitment to our clients’ best interests and to our consistent ability to deliver, competitively-priced complete projects – on time and on budget. In fact, we guarantee we’ll do exactly that!

As a design-build firm, we should be brought onboard at the very early stages of the design phase your project. We can help with the design, with cost analysis and with feasibility studies. We can assemble the team needed to secure city approvals and to build your home – on time and on budget.

We will gladly answer your questions and do our best to help even if you already have another builder engaged.

Please feel free to contact us for initial cost and feasibility consultation, or if you already have plans – to get a competitive bid from a top-tier builder.

Whole House Remodeling

Older homes may often appeal to us based on their location. The neighborhood the house is in, the school district it ‘belongs’ to, the commute to work from that location (obviously, not only an ‘LA thing’), the view from the windows – all are meaningful factors when the question of ‘move or remodel’ comes up.

When the costs associated with a real-estate transaction are factored in, along with the (poor) availability of attractive/affordable homes on the market, remodeling our existing home becomes the ‘no brainer’ preferable option.

But older homes have many legacy challenges: the space is fragmented and sometimes claustrophobic, ceilings are low, façade is dated, mechanical systems are sorely lacking, the layout and number of rooms no longer meet our needs, items are in disrepair, energy bills are ‘through the roof’ and, by-and-large, it is most definitely time to get rid of some of the old colors.

Enter whole house remodeling;
To be successful, a major remodeling project must be competently designed, intelligently spec’d, expertly built and competitively priced.
When these parameters are met, the result is an incredible new home, with open spaces, light and air and a contemporary feel (regardless of style), with not a dated element in sight. In a successful major remodel there is no telling what the older layout was like and what the home looked like previously.

We have literally completed, with spectacular success, thousands of major remodeling projects to date. We have the experience, knowhow, and expertise, design ‘chops’ and customer-centered approach to make your project a success as well.

Additions

Families often outgrow their homes. Kids are growing up and need their own rooms. A home office is needed. The in-laws are moving in. We want to add a media room, or a wine cellar, or a gym, or a master suite. We want more space and we would like more open space.

There are many reasons homeowners decide to add to their homes rather than relocate to a larger house; the neighborhood they live in, the school district the home ‘belongs’ to, the commute to work or the view from the windows may all play a part in the decision. Besides, moving means spending a lot of money on the real estate transaction (as opposed to on your home). It also means having to contend with finding what you are looking for in a market with limited inventory of affordable and attractive homes.

No wonder most people opt for the remodeling option – they add to their existing home rather than move!

To be successful, a significant addition to the house must be competently designed, intelligently spec’d, expertly built and competitively priced.

A well-designed addition is one that seamlessly integrates into the home – both externally and internally.

From the outside, the home should not look like it was added to. Rather, it should look organically whole.

From the inside, the floor plan and flow should be natural, sensible and uniform in style. Your addition project should be properly designed, expertly built, sensibly spec’d and competitively priced. It should also be completed timely and be on budget.

Design & Build

What is a design-build contractor? How would one differ from other contractors and why should you care? What are the pros and cons for you, the homeowner, in dealing with a design-build contractor?

Let’s try to answer all of the above questions.

In the Design-Build business model, your builder is responsible for both the design and the construction phases of the project. Your builder will have plans developed based on your input – your wish list and your budget. Once plans are completed and permits have been secured, the builder will build the project as per the plans and the specifications agreed upon.

This model is different in that you are dealing with a single entity (the design-build contractor) for all the stages of the work, starting with the design phase and all through to completion of the project and beyond. This, as opposed to be dealing with a separate entity (an architect or designer) as plans are developed and only than engaging with a builder to execute the plans.

Why should you care and what are the pros and cons to this model:

Having a single entity accountable is always a plus. There is no ‘passing of the buck’. There is no friction between inflated egos of team members. Nothing is ‘lost in translation’ as the entity that you dealt with to develop the plans is the same one that needs to interpret the plans and do the construction. If there are any issues, there should be no question as to who is answerable to you.
A design-build approach will likely also save you a considerable amount. Many design-build firms subsidies the (potentially substantial) cost of design and use it as a means to get more projects.

Not all design-build firms follow the same, identical model. Some will have you locked into hiring them for the actual work once they do the design. Others will commit you in a more subtle way, such as have you stated your intent to hire them for the work or including some language to that effect in their paperwork without pointing this out to you.

We strongly advise that you insist on complete freedom to hire whomever you choose for the actual construction once plans are done. Else, you will loose the ability to competitively bid your project and to disengage from the design-build company you hired, should they prove to be lacking in some way.

Unique Modern Kitchens

Mal Corboy's creations ("cabinets" seems a woefully inadequate word to describe these marvels) are awe-inspiring. When walking into a Mal Corboy kitchen, one is mesmerized by the unmatched fit and finish, the unique use of unexpected materials, the built-in lighting and the streamlined, trend-setting contemporary design.

The quality of Mal Corboy's Cabinets must be experienced to be fully appreciated. Mal Corboy kitchens handily meet and exceed the finest German and Italian cabinetmakers' exacting standards. And yet, unlike Alno cabinets, Poggenpohl kitchens and the like, each Mal Corboy kitchen is personally custom-designed by Mal Corboy himself.

Mal Corboy is a New Zealand-based, internationally-renowned and certified designer and cabinetmaker. Mal Corboy combines his technical mastery and remarkable design instincts to produce some of the world's best cabinets. He is aided by some of New Zealand's top craftsmen and artisans.

Using the best available German hardware, a variety of materials and proprietary processes, a Mal Corboy Cabinet is just as likely to be wrapped in stone or stainless steel as it is to be made of glass in any color and pattern. Mal is a perfectionist reaching for the ultimate possible for a given budget, delivering timeless designs and products that stand the test of time. In fact, any of Mal Corboy's kitchens would fit right in the Museum of Modern Art, yet they are made to stand the test of time and provide years of trouble free operation, even in the busiest of homes.

If you or your clients are considering top-tier modern kitchen cabinets, look no further. While Poggenpohl kitchen, Snaidero cabinets, Alno cabinets and others are magnificent products, Mal Corboy Cabinets are just as staggeringly impressive. The difference? Mal Corboy will personally design your kitchenmaking it a unique piece (there would never be another like it anywhere in the world) and as compared to a Poggenpohl kitchen or others will save thousands of dollars.

For representation in the North American market, Mal Corboy Cabinets looked for an American company that shared its perfectionism and its client-centered mind-set. Mal Corboy Cabinets was also looking for a company that faithfully serves the affluent residential client and that has the needed know-how and experience remodeling high-end kitchens, bathrooms and estate-homes. They found all in A.I.T. Development Corporation (Mega Builders) – Southern California's preeminent luxury home builders.

With well over 1,000 kitchens and bathrooms "under our belt", years of designing, building and remodeling the finest homes in Southern California, awards, accolades and media coverage that is truly remarkable and the highest possible BBB ranking, Mega Builders is the perfect company to represent and distribute Mal Corboy Cabinets in North America. Trained by Mal Corboy, we provide all the needed support and service locally for these spectacular products. From the initial phone (or email) contact, through site visits, measurement, pricing and sales and including the installation and post production support, all of Mal Corboy Cabinets installations in North America are handled by Mega Builders.

Home Damage Restoration

Water Damage Restoration
Over the years we helped thousands of homeowners secure full compensation for their damages and got their homes to better than pre-loss condition. Our expertise include getting the insurance company to pay all that is needed to fully address the loss and than taking care of all the remediation work and repairs that are needed.

Fire Damage Restoration
Dealing with 'ambulance chasers' is as bad as dealing directly with your insurance company or their 'recommended contractors' - with either you will be short changed! Conversely, we will work solely on your behalf. Once the claim is settled we will repair your home to the same exacting standards we employ in our estate caliber homes.

Insurance related losses and their repair differ wildly from 'run of the mill' remodeling. First, gathering estimates is a strategic mistake. Are you trying to find a cheaper Los Angeles remodeling contractor to save your insurance company money? Dealing with the insurance company or their assigned adjuster is a mistake as well. They do not have your best interests in mind (the more they pay you the lower their profit – a conflict of interests if there ever was one). Dealing with an insurance recommended or referred contractor is a mistake as well. The insurance company and not you is the contractor ultimate clients (the insurance company will refer many more jobs down the road to 'their' contractor if they (as opposed to you) were happy with the contractor's scope of work and quote – again, a conflict of interest you better avoid. Last, it is also a mistake to engage with a general contractor whose specialty is remodeling. Los Angeles is choke-full of these. While most are not companies you'd want to deal with, some are indeed excellent remodeling companies. Alas, unless they are experts in dealing with insurance companies and in adjusting a loss – essential skills you need your contractor to have - they would not serve your interests well.

So what should you do?
You need a company that offers damage restoration in Los Angeles with the skills, know-how, experience and wherewithal to deal with the insurance company, its adjuster and the so called experts and contractors they would inevitably bring to bear on your claim so that they could under pay it. You will also need a top-tier complete home remodeling company for the actual repairs, once your claim is settled, so that your home would look just as good or better than it did before the loss. Simply stated - you need Mega Builders.

We have dealt, with spectacular success with thousands of insurance losses – always representing the homeowners and never the insurance companies. Our experience and expertise include earthquake damage repairs and retrofitting, water damage repair in Los Angeles, fire damage restoration and rebuilds, smoke and soot damage remediation and repair, and more. We have served and continue to serve as experts in court cases as well, always representing the homeowners' side. We WILL get you the full value of your loss.

This though is only half of the story. Once the claim is settled, your home needs to be repaired, restored and brought back to pre-loss condition, so that you are thrilled with the process, the time that it took and with the results. As one of the Southland's pre-eminent contractors you are in very good hands indeed on that score as well. We proudly enjoy the BBB's highest rating and our past clients' enthused endorsements. We also offer double the industry standard warranty on everything we do. Give us a call today so that your claim gets the attention and handling that it deserves and needs.

Solar Panel Installation

Solar panel installation is a great way to utilize the sun's energy and convert it into significant, long lasting savings. For your solar investment to be successful though, you will need to get your system installed for a great price, you will need your system to be optimally designed and put together and you will need to avoid the all-too-common problem associated with solar power panels installed on roofs, which is roof leaks.

We are a licensed and certified solar company. We are also licensed builders, roofers and 'green' building specialists. Of the many solar installers Los Angeles has to offer, few (if any) can offer you what we provide to each and every one of our clients: a review of all the building elements, as they relate to energy savings, structural and seismic considerations, roof leak avoidance and architectural considerations. Our prices are unbeatable too.

With a top BBB rating (A+), with close to 9000 completed projects, with many local and national media stories, recognition and awards and with clients who are raving fans of our company, you know we are not your run of the mill contractor. We are as dedicated to making our clients happy as we are to being brutally competitive in the marketplace. But solar power installations are about more than just a low price. Poorly and sloppily designed systems are endemic in this industry, as are leaks in roofs that are the result of careless installs. Over-sized systems that increase your 'price of admission' to the world of solar power are all too common as well. Fetching a higher system cost, over-sized systems are great for the solar company but are terrible for your return on investment.

We will help you explore ways to decrease your energy bills before you spend a single dollar on the solar system. We will than design a common sense solar system tailored specifically to your needs, location and home. A system that will pay for itself sooner than other systems would.

We will also pay attention to the look of the system. Cheap power is great, but so is a nice looking home.

Give us a call for a complete review and audit of your energy consumption and of your property for best type, size, location for your solar system.

For a limited time, we waive our charge for this service. Call us today!
